Affordability And Selection Keep Dobbs Ferry PopShop Going Strong

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- After working for large corporations for a few years the inner entrepreneur in Sarah Milano finally came out.

The result: Dobbs Ferry-based PopShop, a fashion boutique catering to teens, tweens and adult women.

The store launched in late August 2013 strictly as a social pop-up shop company selling trendy and affordable clothing and jewelry in homes through shopping events. Hosts invited their friends and received rewards used towards free merchandise based on the sales.

After a few successful events, Milano, whose background is in media, not fashion, decided to open a temporary three-month spot in Irvington as a way for test the market.

When that got a positive response, she opened in Dobbs in January 2014. Knowing the area helped -- she grew up in Irvington though she lives in Manhattan now -- as did leveraging insight from young family members.

She also did a lot of research. "I learned the industry on my own and just had a passion for clothes/jewelry and enjoyed helping others find what they were looking for when shopping," she said.

One thing that sets her store apart is the boutique's price points and array of items for women and girls of all ages. Everything in the store is less then $60 with a majority of items in the $20-$30 range.

"The initial target market was women in their teens and twenties, but I quickly expanded to carry styles for older women and young girls," explained Milano. "I try to carry a lot of trendy and unique pieces that you may not find in other stores, but also plenty of casual basics so customers can pop in if they need something specific last minute."

Her store's mission is to make women and girls look and feel their best and have a personal shopping experience while sticking to their budget. "One of our taglines is 'Great style starts with inner beauty,'" she explained.

Look for lots of fringe, crochet, and lace this spring/summer, along with details added to tops, shorts, and dresses. Rompers, which were big last summer, are still popluar this season.

And if you haven't popped by (no pun intended), check out the store's second annual sidewalk sale and back room blowout (think $5, $10, $15, $20 racks and bins) on June 6 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Also in the works: Plans to expand the e-commerce portion of the business and grow the brand's online/social media presence.

And a second location isn't out of the question. "It's my long term goal," said Milano.

PopShop Style is at 32 Cedar St, (914) 693-0072, www.popshopstyle.com/.
