Westchester Mom Credits Inspiration For Baby Line To Her Three Little Spuds

SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- A nursery isn’t just any room, at least according to Scarsdale resident Melanie Kayam.

In her mind -- as a mom of three -- it’s a sacred space where imaginations run wild and sweet dreams are spun, where songs are shared and snuggles reign supreme.

It's also the inspiration (along with those aforementioned young children) behind her new nursery décor brand, “Hello Spud."

The organic bath and (mostly) organic bedding collection launched April 27 and is in select buybuy BABY stores including Scarsdale and Port Chester and on buybuybaby.com, with prices that range from $12.99 to $59.99. Everything is sold as open stock mix and match.

Kayam, a graduate of the Parson's School of Design, spent the past 20 years in the home decor industry. She decided to branch out on her own after the birth of her youngest son was born.

"It has always been a dream of mine since I was a little girl to one day launch my own brand.

"With the birth of our third son, Ethan, the stars finally lined up to take this leap," she said.

Still, with three "little spuds" -- they are five, three and one -- she admits there were late nights working on the computer eating dark chocolate that she hid from her older kids while nursing Ethan that she wanted to give up. However, once she got started, the collection poured out. The rest is now history.

Watching her youngest son react to the different fabrics and colors sparked a host of ideas along with her brand philosophy.

"The word 'inspire' means a lot to us at Hello Spud," she said. "We use color and texture to nurture and inspire baby, and we aim to evoke whimsy and wonder in all of our prints, from pink pineapples to paper airplanes, to inspire songs, storytelling and, hopefully, smiles."

What's special about the line, she said, is that it grows with the baby and works well for toddler beds.

"Our decorative pillow collection, besides looking great on a glider chair, crosses over to all rooms in the home," she said.

The collection also works for photo opps, she added, in particular the star-shaped plush blanket, heart-shaped plush blanket and the little photo blanket, a milestone item that documents baby's days, weeks, months, years.

You can see the Hello Spud items in person -- and meet Kayam -- at the Big City Mom's event in NYC on Wednesday, May 24. Go HERE for details.
