WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Acupuncture has literally gone to the dogs - or any pet you may have - at Veterinarian Andrew Frishman’s practice, Progressive Animal Hospital, which expanded to White Plains in March.

The Mount Kisco resident and Chappaqua native treats most of his patients with traditional medicine, but also offers the ancient Chinese therapy of acupuncture to pets with chronic pain. The percentage of pet owners using holistic pet therapies rose from 6 percent in 1996 to 21 percent in 2003, according to the American Animal Hospital Association.

Frishman’s practice also makes house calls and has treated pets with acupuncture in the comfort of their own home since opening his practice in Somers in 2006.

“We have one client that we go to her house once a month,” said Debbie Frishman, who added few area veterinarians offer the ancient therapy. “We give acupuncture to two of her dogs. It’s something that people really like.”

Holistic or traditional Chinese medicine combines acupuncture, medicinal herbs and diet modification and may be used to treat arthritis, injuries, hind leg weakness and other age-related illnesses, Frishman said in a statement.

The Horace Greeley High School graduate decided to expand his practice when an office became available in White Plains. Both officers are open every business day and staff splits time between the two.

“We were thinking of opening a satellite clinic for a while,” Debbie said. “We came across this one and we just felt what better place to be than White Plains.”

Frishman, who has a Certificate of Proficiency in Western Herbs, uses herbal medicines to make pets with chronic ailments comfortable. When an animal has cancer, Frishman uses ginseng to boost energy and appetite, astragalus to suppress tumor growth and cordalis to mitigate pain.

“These supplements can’t cure cancer, but they make the pet feel better and improve its quality of life,” he said in the statement.

Progressive Animal Hospital cares for small animals and pocket pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats.  It offers physicals, immunizations, spaying and neutering, as well as treating sick animals. While it uses a holistic approach when appropriate, the veterinary practice also embraces advances in veterinary treatments. It is one of the first in the region to offer genetic testing to detect preventable chronic diseases, according to the statement.

“If we know an animal’s genetic blueprint, we can prescribe the proper medication immediately, rather than finding out what we prescribed only made your pet feel worse,” Frishman said in the statement.

Progressive Animal Hospital of White Plains is on 110 South Kenisco Ave. in the same building as Best Friends Pet Care.
