Lifelong Tolland resident Alfred Mancini began fighting health-related issues on Thursday, Sept. 7. After a little more than a month, things took a turn for the worse when he was admitted to the West Haven VA Medical Center's intensive care unit on Friday, Oct. 13.
After countless tests, doctors eventually found that Mancini was suffering from a third-degree atrioventricular block in his heart. Since then, he has remained in the ICU, unable to work.
"Doctors are still trying to understand what’s causing my heart issues but because of all this, I have been without any form of income to provide for my family," said Mancini, who served in the military and is now a member of Tolland's Veterans Recognition Commission. He was also unable to qualify for state paid leave, he added.
To help him during this difficult time, Mancini's soon-to-be sister-in-law, Alia Miller, began a GoFundMe page intended to raise money to help Mancini while he is unable to work.
"We are asking for any contribution you can make as Alfred is unable to collect state leave due to his job. Once Alfred is home, we want him to focus on his health and to not have to stress about bills and such," Miller wrote on the fundraiser page.
"Alfred is nothing but kind and loving and is always there for his family and friends. Please keep Alfred," she added.
As of Wednesday, Oct. 25, over $4,800 had been raised for Mancini out of a $10,000 goal.
