DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Dobbs Ferry High School student/athletes continue their annual fundraising efforts Friday with the "Ballin' For Vets Dodge Ball Tournament" to aid the veterans organization "The Mission Continues."

The annual tournament, which has helped raise thousands of dollars for Haiti relief and breast cancer groups over the last four years, is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Dobbs Ferry High School auditorium. Seniors Riley Nieman, Jesse Silberfein and Nick Kost have made this event their senior internship project, and the would-be business majors are counting on raising $4,000-$5,000 in total donations. “The tournament highlights all the great aspects of our town such as the overwhelming selflessness of the community and the ability to come together to help a greater cause," the seniors said in a statement. "We want to encourage all our friends, families and residents to come out and enjoy the dodge ball tournament and we thank everyone in advance for their generous donations." Nieman, Silberfein and Kost organized the teams and sold T-shirts (made in the USA) and camouflage wristbands to secure initial funding. The boys personally visited 28 local businesses to raise sponsorship money and publicized the event with posters. "The Mission Continues is a fantastic organization and we are eternally grateful to our veterans and wanted to do something in return to help them," the organizers said. The final phase of the senior trio's business plan will be the lining up the teams, setting up the courts, putting together the competition brackets and organizing the food and refreshments and ticket sales. The field of entries includes a football coaches team, a fire department team, teacher teams as well as the Average Joes, Globogym Purple Cobras and The Goofballs to name a few. Each team in the tournament must have five players and a minimum of one female on the squad. The entry is $20 per team member to enter the tournament which includes get a “Ballin' for Vets” shirt, a wristband and the tournament program. Those who are not playing may donate $15 and receive a T-shirt/wristband package and participate as a spectator. Spectators may donate $5 for a wrist band (veterans get in free). A full corporate sponsorship goes for $100. For more information about fielding a team or donating to the event, please contact Elizabeth Hausman 914-693-1500 x3013.
