HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- (August 13, 2017) — Hastings is going to the moon.

The Hastings-on-Hudson Village Arts Commission is opening "How High The Moon,"  a multimedia art exhibit and village-wide celebration of man’s fascination with the moon.

The juried art exhibit, in conjunction with the Hastings Historical Society, showcases 21 works selected from approximately 150 submissions. Through a variety of media — painting, collage, printmaking, photography, fiber arts, and sound, asking the 21 artists, "How does the moon move you?"

The event kicks off with a reception on Thursday, Sept. 7 at Village Hall Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be up until Oct. 31.

“Since the beginning of time, man has been fascinated by the moon,” said Lisa Oswald, who conceived of the show and led the curation of the exhibit on behalf of the Hastings Village Arts Commission. “The range and diversity of the artistic interpretations in our show captures the magic, mystery, and meaning of the moon throughout our lives,” she adds.

The exhibit will highlight the Draper family, who lived in Hastings and took the first successful photographs of the moon. Dava Sobel will be discussing a book about the Drapers on Sunday, Oct. 1 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hastings Library.

“We are also excited to promote the Draper family’s contributions to science and significance of those events to our community. We want everyone in Hastings-on-Hudson to know and appreciate our Village’s special place in lunar history,” said Natalie Barry, president of the Hastings Historical Society.

Throughout the run of the show, Riverrun Bookstore and Galapagos Books will be creating moon-themed window displays and stocking related books for sale.
