Self Storage Office Destroyed With Fire And Sledgehammer; Arrest Made

A man who allegedly used a sledgehammer to break into a Self Storage facility and set it on fire has been arrested.

On Tuesday, Oct. 6, around 3:30 p.m. Waterbury police arrested Jacen Heslop, 32, of Waterbury, on the charges of first-degree arson, first-degree reckless endangerment, fired egress criminal mischief, second-degree breach of the peace, second-degree threatening, first-degree burglary, and fire degree criminal trespass, according to the Republican American.

Heslop had been renting a storage unit at a facility on Captain Neville Drive but was evicted days before the fire. Later, he allegedly used a sledgehammer to smash open the storage facility’s gate and the door to the company’s office. Heslop then allegedly poured gas in the office and lit it on fire.

The manager, who was in the apartment attached to the office, was able to escape the flames

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in about 10 minutes.
