The Title V Step Up to STEM summer program engages students by demonstrating the relevance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in real-life scenarios.
“We are excited to have Virginia (Ross) demonstrate first-hand the relevance that STEM fields, particularly psychology, play in disaster preparedness," Mercy College’s Title V STEM Grant Project Coordinator Carolina Hernandez said. "It’s wonderful that she is a Mercy College graduate. I can’t think of anyone better than a successful Mercy College STEM alumna.”
Ross, who graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, specializes in how to prepare families for a disaster through her business and lecturing programs.
“My goal is to educate everyone on the importance of taking a pro-active approach and being self-reliant for whatever may come your way," Ross said. Ross said that as an Emergency responder for The Red Cross, she has seen firsthand the perils of not being prepared.
"Research has proven that people who are mentally prepared are much more likely to survive a disaster and will recover from it more quickly," Ross said. The free camp is open to high school seniors, college freshmen and sophomores, and students pursuing STEM majors, including psychology.
