According to a statement from the school district, the editors of Roar, White Plains High School's 2016 literary magazine, took first place at the American Scholastic Press Association's (ASPA) annual contest.

Among those honored for their efforts were editors-in-chief Esther Ritchin and Shoshi Weiner; art directors Elana Hausknecht and Uri Sang; and Literary Editor Lucia Iannone, the district said.

Each year, the ASPA reviews scholastic newspapers, yearbooks and magazines and compares student publications from colleges, universities and high schools across the country, searching for those that stand above all others.

According to the school district, the judges base their scores on page design, story layout, graphics, headlining, style, advertising, photography, content, creativity and editing.

Describing Roar as among the country's best artistic student magazines in 2016, the judges cited the publication's "superior concept" along with its editing, layout/graphics, creativity, writing and art, according to the school district.

As the student group's advisors, art teachers Michael Chiariello and Miranda DeMalla also were honored.
