Phelps Memorial Hospital Earns Stroke Award

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Phelps Memorial Hospital Center's stroke care is solid gold, the American Stroke Association says.

Phelps recently earned its third “Gold Plus” Performance Achievement Award for stroke care. The “Gold Plus” award honors hospitals who take measures to treat stroke victims with a variety of methods aimed at reducing death and improving stroke patients' lives and recognizes hospitals' success in treating stroke victims according to national standards and recommendations.

Strokes are the third-leading cause of death in the United States and one person suffers a stroke every 45 seconds, according to the American Stroke Association.

"With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the Get With the Guidelines-Stroke Performance Achievement Award demonstrates Phelps' commitment to being one of the top hospitals in the country for providing aggressive, proven stroke care," Dr. Sanda Carniciu, physician director of the Stroke Center at Phelps, said. "We will continue to focus on providing care that has been shown in the scientific literature to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients with evidence-based protocols."`
