Woman Approaches School In Westchester, Turned Away: 'Misunderstanding,' Police Say

The department added that they had been searching for the woman after they received a report that she had attempted to pick up a child at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Port Chester at 40 Olivia St. despite not being on the school's authorized list.

According to police, the department will always "err on the side of caution" in similar incidents.

"Although, there are a few who have concerns about the school's policy, in this case it proved to work," the department wrote on social media, adding, "We would like to thank the public for the help in providing information to get this incident clarified." 

Original Report: Authorities are looking for a woman who approached an elementary school in Westchester and failed to give proper identification before walking away.

The incident happened on Friday, Sept. 22 around 5:15 p.m., when a woman approached John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Port Chester at 40 Olivia St.

According to Port Chester Police, when the woman was asked for proper ID by school staff, she could not provide it. She then left the school property in an unidentified direction, authorities said.

Further details about the incident were not released. The department later released images of the woman captured on surveillance video.
