The award was created in 2013 to honor the memory of North Stamford Exchange Club founding member Charles Lupinacci. It is awarded to a member of the Stamford community who exhibits extraordinary volunteerism, community service and/or humanitarian deeds.

The award will be presented to Macari at a meeting of the North Stamford Exchange Club on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at Madonia Restaurant

Macari initially started his advocacy for individuals with developmental disabilities while volunteering in the concession stand at the Connecticut Special Olympics over 25 years ago.

He joined Always Reaching for Independence (ARI) in the mid 1980s and was an active member of its board, and eventually became its president. He continued his advocacy towards ARI by expanding services and programs aimed at enhancing the lives of the disabled and their families, primarily focusing on the need for independence in their everyday lives.

During the past several years, Macari has worked tirelessly with lawmakers developing plans and strategies to meet the challenges brought on by state and federal budget cuts. As a result of these budget negotiations, Paul was able to secure funds towards the development and implementation of a respite services program. This program is designed and aimed towards providing much needed relief for parents and family members who deliver around the clock care to their loved ones.

Macari currently serves as President of Friends of ARI, which is an organization managing assets and property for ARI.

Pitney Bowes, Macari's employee, selected him to represent the organization on the Stamford Family YMCA Board. On the YMCA Board, he works diligently to raise funds for after school programs, camps, and health and nutritional training for the youth of Stamford.

North Stamford Exchange Club will present him with a donation to ARI in his name.

The recipient of the inaugural Charles Lupinacci Humanitarian Award was Scott Wolak, president of Connecticut Pharmacy Long-Term Care and former owner of Hope Street Pharmacy.
