Two Dogs Celebrating 'Bark' Mitzvah

ELMSFORD, N.Y. -- Bar Mitzvahs are a rite of passage for any 13-year-old.  And apparently, that applies to dogs as well.

Paws Crossed Animal Rescue in Elmsford is hosting a Bark Mitzvah on Friday at 4 p.m. to honor two 13-year-old brothers, Rocky and Baxter.

The celebration will be held at Paws Crossed headquarters at 100 Warehouse Lane South in Elmsford.

The bull terriers previously lived on a large farm in North Salem until their owner passed away.

At the Bark Mitzvah, Cantor Elizabeth Sternlie of Sinai Free Synagogue in Mount Vernon will be delivering a blessing and yarmulkes have been made for the brothers.

Julie Potter, business manager at  Paws Crossed said they have received numerous donations in honor of the Bark Mitzvah, with many people giving chai, by donating $18. or by donating the food the dogs like.

"These two brothers are amazing," Potter said. "They have captured everyone's hearts. We know there is somebody out there for them."

Potter said the dogs have settled into Paws Crossed nicely, though they have some minor health issues. The two brothers are completely inseparable, Potter said.

"They have been together they were puppies," Potter said. "They sleep next to each other. We have to walk them together or else the other one cries. They love each other."

A no-kill animal shelter, Paws Crossed has currently 40 dogs and 30 cats looking for a forever home.
