Hastings Library Public-Diplomacy in the 21st Century: 7:30 p.m. Hastings resident Judith McHale, who served as under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, will speak on the Obama Policy of Public Engagement. A principal adviser to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, McHale worked to develop and implement a new strategic framework for public diplomacy. Refreshments will be served at a reception following the program. Free and open to the general public. Orr Room, Hastings Public Library.

Thursday, Dec. 6

Teen Book Club : 5:30 p.m. Group meets to discuss the book "Flygirl" by Sherri Smith. Ardsley Public Library, 9 American Legion Drive.

Storm Study: 7 p.m. Science teacher Dan Brownstein will present "Superstorm Sandy: Origins, Impact, Lessons and Looking Forward." Hastings High School auditorium.

Friday, Dec. 7

Hastings Friday Night Live: 6 p.m. Community night featuring the annual lighting of the Christmas tree and Menorah. VFW Park.

Book sale and officer election: 6:30 to 9 p.m. The Friends of the Library Annual Holiday Used Book Sale and Meeting for members only. Election of new officers is 6:30 to 6:45 p.m., followed by book sale with wine and cheese. The book sale will be open to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
