Scenario 1: Gift-Shoppers’ Nightmare. It's the fifth loop of a way-overheated department store and it seems impossible to find a gift before the stores close. Think outside the gift box. Is there an experience you can create? A service to provide? Some personal talent to share? Maybe there’s a charity or cause to which you can donate in your recipient's name.

Scenario 2: Dinner Disaster. There are only thirty minutes until mealtime and things are spinning out of control in the kitchen. In this scenario, ask for help. Most people would rather contribute and feel useful rather than stand around sipping cocktails. Graciously accepting help creates a wonderful opportunity to connect authentically with guests and will be far more memorable than a picture-perfect meal.

Scenario 3: Dieters’ Paradox. You’ve read all the articles and tips about how to ‘stick to your diet’ and ‘beat the holiday weight gain.’ But during the holiday season, there is so much temptation. Accept that no matter how disciplined any dieter can be throughout the year, there’s a very good chance they will indulge at least once or twice during the holiday season. Give yourself permission to truly enjoy some delicious holiday treats, if only for a night or two.

Scenario 4: Cranky Relative Syndrome. If there is a relative that just can't get into the holiday spirit, don't let it ruin the night. First, take a moment to appreciate family and friends that are with you to celebrate the holidays, then suggest games or activities that the whole crowd can enjoy. Activities such as card, board, and parlor games, a nostalgic singalong, a look through old family photo albums or maybe just a long walk after a meal can bring everyone holiday joy.

Before and after the holidays, set aside at least a few hours to indulge in real self-care. That might involve exercise, physical pampering, hiring a professional team to clean your house or maybe just a perfect solitary afternoon with a cup of tea and a great book. Happy holidays!
