HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Janet Wendover is one of more than two dozen vendors at the monthly Hastings Flea, and her tiny booth is filled with so much variety, one could spend an afternoon checking out The Canning Jar's wares.

Wendover, a Millbrook resident who sells her homemade products at farmers and flea markets throughout Putnam, Westchester and Dutchess counties, left her career in grants management a year ago to share her creative cooking and craft skills with her customers.

"I make low-sugar jams -- less than one-third of the 'commercial' brands -- five different pestos, homemade chocolates, homegrown herbal teas and custom crocheted items (baby clothing, shawls, blankets, hats, gloves)," Wendover said. "I began the business a year ago and have not looked back. I absolutely love what I do."

Though she sells ready-made products, Wendover said all of her products can be customized.

"I do a lot of custom orders," Wendover said. " Around the holidays I offer many varieties of gift sets and will switch out items based on a customer's request."

Wendover said, "I've always been crafty and loved to create things.

"My mom taught me how to crochet when I was 11, and I never stopped doing it," She said. "My mom also taught me to can and cook. I've always loved to cook but never did it professionally before. My son has been telling me for years to open a business."

Now that she is the owner/operator of a new business, Wendover spends roughly 35-40 hours cooking in a week but will try to make enough product to last for two weeks. The opposite weeks are spent on my other products -- pestos, herbal teas and homemade chocolates -- when she can get them in, she said.

"People seem to love the pestos and lemon and lime curd," Wendover said of her most popular products. The most popular flavors are the unusual ones such as rhubarbs, strawberry rhubarb, blueberry rhubarb, raspberry jalapeno and ginger peach marmalade with vanilla, she said.

Wendover will be at the Hastings Flea on Sunday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and the White Plains Flea Market each Wednesday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
