The Hastings Library is joining the New York Blood Center for its "Super Community Blood Drive" that partners with the XLVIII New York/New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee for the first New York area Super Bowl to be played in February at Met Life Stadium.

Hastings librarian Susan Feir, who has helped coordinate blood drives and donates blood and platelets regularly, said the library sponsors several drives each year.

"This drive is a little different because we have the Super Bowl connection," said Feir, who donates in memory of her late husband Mitchell. "We do three New York Blood Center drives each year. We encourage people to come and and donate because there is always a need." The Super Bowl blood drive campaign will encompass New Jersey and the five boroughs of New York City as well as Westchester, Rockland, Nassau and Suffolk counties and the State of New Jersey. The "Super Community Blood Drive" is aimed at motivating people to donate blood for patients in New York and New Jersey who need blood transfusions for traumatic injuries, illnesses and surgeries. Each person who donates blood as part of the campaign will be eligible for the sweepstakes for a pair of tickets to Super Bowl XLVIII. Blood donors also will receive a Super Community Blood Drive wristband. "Those who want to donate can help by scheduling an appointment so we can plan for the day, but we welcome people to come and donate without an appointment," Feir said. The Hastings Library blood drive will run from noon to 6 p.m. For questions, call Susan Feir at 914-478-3977.
