Holiday Eggstravaganza Delights Hastings Children, Families

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- The long, cold and stormy winter seemed like a distant memory on Saturday, April 12, when young children filled a warm and sunny Reynolds Field in Hastings-on-Hudson for the annual holiday Eggstravaganza.

Sponsored by the Hastings Recreation Department and Hastings Police Benevolent Association, the event drew more than 200 children who "hunted" the field for colored, candy-filled eggs, enjoyed refreshments and played in the nearby playground.

"It's a lot warmer than last year," said Sam Brecker, a Village Department of Public Works employee who volunteered to wear another uniform and play the Easter Bunny. "I know it's warm in here. But the kids are having fun."

Parents and their children, ages 2-8, lined up for the 11 a.m. start to the egg hunt. Once the race for treasure was underway, the children quickly picked up the crop of colorful plastic eggs and enjoyed cookies and juice.

Recreation Department Superintendent Kendra Garrison and her staff served refreshments and made sure the kids had a safe event.

"We were in wool hats last year, so this is much better for the children and the parents," Garrison said. "We'll start them off and hope they all get some eggs."
