WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Spring is the perfect time of year to give a worn space a fresh look with a new paint job.

"Walking into a new colored, freshly painted room is like opening the windows on the first warm spring day," said Kim Scappaticci, design director at Wallauer’s Design Center. "It's enlightening and a new beginning."

And while selecting the right color for a space is paramount, having the proper tools to get the job done is also important. To help homeowners paint like pros, the experts at Wallauer's Design Center offered their tips on how to guarantee success, no matter the job size.

Choose the right brush -- All brushes aren't created equal. Depending on the size of the surface, a wide or narrow brush may be more appropriate. For large surfaces, choose a 3-inch or 4-inch brush with a thickness of ¾ to 1 inch. To paint hard to reach corners, use a 2-inch wide brush with tapered edges. For molding and other woodwork, a bush between 1 inch and 2 ½ inches wide works best.

Keep on rollin' -- For large, open areas like walls or ceilings, rollers can make quick work. Just make sure not to overcoat the roller, as it can spray excess pain on floors, windows or even painters. For latex based paints, use a roller with a synthetic or fiber surface. When working with alkyd or oil-based paints, use either synthetic or natural fiber rollers.

Proper prep is key -- Prepping a room makes cleanup a breeze and can eliminate unsightly errors. Taping moulding and windows creates a crisp finish line, while using drop cloths and tarps keeps floors fleck-free. Also, be sure do designate your favorite "painting outfit" and use proper eyewear and gloves when necessary.

"The most important part of your project is selecting the right color," said Scappaticci. "Always try the paint sample in your space before deciding on a color and make sure you like the color if you will spend the majority of your time in the room."
