But this was no ordinary birthday.
Millie Russo, who has lived in Yonkers since 1950, turned 100.
On Sunday afternoon, family and friends came out to celebrate her birthday in Irvington. Millie knew the party was being planned, but was still happy and surprised. Guests came from as far as Florida and Pittsburgh to celebrate with Millie.
This birthday celebration was no secret, but Millie was stunned at the turnout.
"I can't believe the amount of people who are here," said Millie.
Millie was born on May 7, 1915 to Emilio and Gaetana Tutino and grew up in Italian Harlem with her four siblings. Carmelina married Augusto Russo in 1938. Carmelina and Augusto moved to Yonkers, where they raised their two children, Tony Russo and Lilian (Russo) Fiorillo. Millie has 23 great grandchildren.
Tony Russo, who lives in Irvington, owns Aries Wine and Spirits on West Post Road in White Plains.
Santa Russo (not a relative of Millie's) has known Millie for about 10 years and was happy to be able to celebrate this special birthday with her.
"Millie is a very resilient woman," said Russo. "She is an extraordinary vivacious woman."
Among those helping Millie celebrate her 100th was Fr. Christopher Monturo of St. Anthony of Padua in West Harrison.
He first met Millie when she was 92.
"She comes to my parish," he said.
Father Chris has come to every one of Millie's birthdays since he has met her.
"We love her and wish her many more blessed, happy and healthy years," he said.
Father Chris led the traditional Happy Birthday song to Millie and then Father Chris and Father George both said a blessing for Millie.
