IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Mima Vinoteca is named for someone everyone knows - a grandmother, or, "mima."

It's a fitting name because the  the five-year-old rustic Italian restaurant in Irvington's purpose is to honor the family.

Old pictures of the owners' grandmothers decorate the walls along with wine bottles from Italy.

The menu, which changes seasonally, is full of rich, homestyle Italian dishes, including meat and cheese plates, small plates, pastas, meats, salads, soups, seafood and more made by chef Daniel Van Etten.

Of note is the spaghettini, which is served fresh with baby octopus, pear tomatoes, kalamata olives and seasoned bread crumbs ($23).

For lighter fare, the grilled flatbread is adorned with an apricot jam spread, speck (smoked prosciutto) and goat chese ($13).

Desserts are not neglected here. The bombolini, otherwise known as Italian doughnuts, are made of ricotta fresca and comes topped with powdered sugar. It is accompanied with caramel dipping sauce ($8).

Many of the ingredients in each dish, most notably the fruits and vegetables, are sourced locally from the Hudson Valley. The meats are also organic.

The restaurant also has a full bar, stocked with more than 80 Italian wines - 25 served by glass and 60 bottles. The Umani Ronchi San Lorenzo Montepulciano and Rivera Estate Il Falcone Reserva are among the prized possessions.

Three to four wines are featured each night. Italian beer is also available, along with dessert cocktails.

Mima is, as its name implies, a family affair. It is owned by the Leggio and Santucci families, who also own Zuppa of Yonkers. Cousins John Leggio, of Tarrytown, and Dana Santucci, of Briarcliff Manor, are chief owners.

"This restaurant is really meant to honor our families and our heritage," John Leggio said, "many of our family members are involved with creating the menus and overseeing the restaurant."

Luckily, guests can bring their families too. There is a 30-person private room for parties, and they also cater outside events.

Mima Vinoteca is open for a price-fixed lunch on Tuesdays to Fridays from noon to 3:30 p.m. Dinner is offered Mondays to Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Fridays to Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Dinner is also served on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

All major credit cards are accepted.

The restaurant is located at 63 Main Street. Parking can be located on the street in front.
