Moved By Tragedy, Late Yonkers Philanthropists Still Support Community

YONKERS, N.Y. -- In the face of unspeakable sadness, both Marty and Iris Walshin turned their heartbreak into hope for the greater Yonkers community.

After losing both their daughters, Marty and Iris Walshin devoted considerable time and funds to helping non-profit causes across Westchester County.

Lifelong New Yorkers, the couple founded and operated Martin Walshin, Inc., a Westchester-based HVAC supply company which rose from humble beginnings to become a multi-million dollar business. As their business grew from operating out of a station wagon to eventually becoming the area's largest wholesale distributors, the Walshins experienced two separate tragedies. Both their daughters, Donna and Helen, died unexpectedly, leaving a hole in their lives.

Inspired by the experience of losing those they loved most, the Walshins turned their energies to sponsoring an array of local charities, including the Yonkers Police Athletic Foundation, the Jewish Council of Yonkers and St. John’s Riverside Hospital.

St. John’s has long been the recipient of the Walshins’ generosity, as both Iris and Marty served on the hospital's Board of Trustees. The couple contributed to the construction of many hospital projects, as well as awarded annual scholarships to nurses in the Cochran School of Nursing.

Today, the couple's legacy lives on through the Marty and Iris Walshin Foundation, which they established in 1999. The foundation seeks to provide financial support to charitable organizations and educational programs that promote the well-being of children and young adults in the community.

Marty Walshin died on December 16, 2001 and Iris passed away on September 8, 2008.

The Walshins were great sponsors of the St. John’s Riverside Hospital Golf Outing, which is now named in their honor, and was held this June. All proceeds earned will support the expansion of the emergency department at St. John's Riverside, a project the couple supported during their lifetime as well.
