Penny Lick Ice Cream, Hastings

The Scoop: How can you not love a place that uses locally sourced natural ingredients including cream and milk produced in the Hudson Valley? All ice creams are freshly made in small batches without the use of gums, artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners. There are also no peanuts or peanut products.

The company was founded in 2013 by area resident Ellen Sledge with the mission of bringing back old-fashioned, custard-based ice cream. Its name, in fact, comes from a style of ice cream vending in the late 19th century. For just a penny, customers would buy a small scoop (a “lick”) of ice cream in a petite glass with a shallow depression.
