RIVERTOWNS, N.Y. -- Ron Vargas heard the news Thursday that Archie Comics, a Mamaroneck-based publisher, has announced that one of its timeless characters, Archie Andrews, will die in an upcoming issue of its "Life With Archie" series.

"I'm past 40, so I remember reading Archie when I was a kid, but I haven't kept up with it," the Tarrytown resident said. "But I don't know about killing off a teenager in a comic. After all, he's not some fighting superhero. I guess they have some business reason for doing it."

Archie Comics released a statement on Thursday, April 10, that Archie Andrews, the freckly, teen comic book star since the 1940s, is set for a heroic end.

"Archie dies as he lived -- heroically and helping a dear friend," said Archie Comics Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. "In the flash-forward 'Life With Archie' storyline, this seemed like a truly fitting way to conclude Archie's story. We're very proud of the story and of its genesis, right here in our office in Mamaroneck, where we've been situated for decades. This is, without a doubt, the biggest Archie story ever."

Susan Boland Garcin of Yonkers was not pleased about the news of Archie's demise.

"I am really upset they are killing off Archie," she said. "I grew up loving those comic books, and I cannot imagine why they would do this 50-plus years down the road. Who goes next, Mickey Mouse? Superman? Very disrespectful of the comic company to kill off an icon. And how are they doing it?"

Several teens in the Rivertowns were asked about the comic book character, but none admitted to being a follower. The most recent edition of the Archie comic was on the stands at Hastings Stationery, but the store clerk said the magazine was not a big seller.
