September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and one New Rochelle mom is hoping area residents will help support those currently undergoing treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City and Harrison with its "Put Cancer in the Penalty Box" event.

Jill Ostrager Cohen, president of a 501c3 organization called Band of Parents , is behind "Put Cancer in the Penalty Box," a skating charity fundraiser taking place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17 at The Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon.

Ostrager Cohen's son Andrew, 10, is a two-time cancer survivor who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in 2010. In 2012, he received a vaccine that Band of Parents helped fund.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated directly to Memorial Sloan Kettering to fund pediatric cancer research.

Ostrager Cohen's son Ethan came up with the concept for the fundraiser last year as part of his bar mitzvah project and his efforts helped raise several thousand dollars. Also involved: The Lebowitz family of Larchmont, whose son Josh did the bar mitzvah project with Ethan.

In the past decade, Band of Parents has expanded its advocacy, funding research in several major cancer centers throughout the U.S. The organization has committed more than $6 million to neuroblastoma research and the organization's efforts have led to an increase in survival rates among children undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma by 50 percent.
