Chemka Pool Finishes Another Successful Season

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – As children head back to school, the air begins to feel cooler, and the leaves start to loose their bright green hue, an unfortunate reality begins to kick in. There’s no denying it – summer is over. With that comes the end of Chemka Pool’s 2012 season of providing Hastings residents a place to cool off and have fun.

The pool officially closes Sunday. Reflecting on the summer season, Kendra Garrison, pool director, said it was a success.

“It was very busy,” Garrison said. “The warm weather definitely helped.”

Garrison said pool attendance was steady and matched numbers from the previous season. The pool had a new event this year, the Chemka Pool Regatta, in which teams were challenged to build boats out of cardboard and other materials. Garrison said she is already excited for next year’s regatta.

“It turned out to be a great day, and we are looking forward to running it again next year,” Garrison said. “I can't wait to see what kind of boats people make.”

The pool staff tries to come up with at least one new event each season and is planning new events for next year, Garrison said. One event that never fails to please is Family Day, the pool’s busiest event.

“Our most popular event is Family Day,” Garrison said. “It’s a really fun day where we have music, games and food. There is something for everyone.”

In addition to the pool’s successful event lineup, residents enjoyed weekly swim programs, Garrison said, and all of the weekly programs will be held again next year. Other than a new event or two, there are no big changes planned for next summer at the pool, she said.

Although the last day for human residents to enjoy the pool is Sunday, their canine counterparts will get one glorious day of swimming and splashing on Sept. 16, when the pool hosts a dog pool party from 2 to 4 p.m.

“It's bittersweet to say goodbye to the 2012 season,” Garrison said.
