Chemka Pool Uses Games to Keep Cool in Hastings

HASTINGS, N.Y. - Cooling off from the heat is a big part of summer and Monday night at the Chemka Pool that was as fun as it was refreshing.

The pool hosted Sunset Splash in Hastings for children entering first through fourth grades. There was a Hawaiian luau theme and lifeguards ran various games for the dozens of children in attendance.

"We have leis for them to wear and just kind of come out and have fun," said Chemka employee Kendra Garrison.

The Sunset Splash started at 7:15 p.m. and the pool was closed to other swimmers so the area could be used for the children

"We have a water balloon toss, a free swim in which they get to use noodles and there's even a sponge race," Garrison said.

Lifeguards were on duty and walked around as there was an influx of small children in the pool Monday night. The kids cleared out of the pool quickly once the first group activity- a relay race - was announced over the speakers.

"We've been doing that for a few years," Garrison said.
