Dobbs Ferry Salesman, Paul Smith Dies at 78

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Paul A. Smith, of Dobbs Ferry, died Nov. 5 at the age of 78.

Born in Cornwall, N.Y., Smith lived in Dobbs Ferry since his late teenage years. As a young man, he endured family hardships through which he persevered to have a career in sales with S.C. Johnson and raise a family of his own.

A former member of the U.S. Air Force, he married Marianna Vano on Feb. 2, 1957 at Our Lady of Pompeii Church. Smith was determined to be a present father for his children, sometimes abandoning his own plans to attend his children's sporting events and other activities. He went on to be there in the same way for his grandchildren.

Smith was a longtime member of the Dobbs Ferry Embassy Club and American Legion Post 1048. In his youth, he enjoyed skiing and golfing. Bocce became a hobby later in life and he'd play with family members at Dobbs Acres. Smith enjoyed a summer residence in the Catskills, as well as photography and reading.

He is survived by his wife Marianna, his daughter Suzanne, his sons Michael and Paul, his brothers James and Jerry, his sisters Gayle and Barbara and four grandchildren.

Friends may visit family at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home on Monday and Tuesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Dobbs Ferry. Memorial Donations may be sent to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, P.O. Box 6062, Albert Lea, MN 56007, or the Dobbs Ferry P.B.A. or Dobbs Ferry V.C.A.
