Dobbs Ferry's William Tackett Dies at 85

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - William "Bill" Tackett, a former longtime resident of Dobbs Ferry, died Dec. 17 after a long illness. He was 85.

Tackett served on the Dobbs Ferry Library and Dobbs Ferry Historical Society boards.

He was born in Dallas, Texas on Oct. 13, 1926. Tackett served in the public relations office of the Army Air Forces in Germany during the end of World War II.

Upon his return stateside, Tackett received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Texas at Austin. In the 1950s, Tackett moved to New York to work for Harcourt, Brace and World, later renamed Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich.

He eventually became deputy director of the college sales department at Harcourt. After his retirement from publishing, Tackett began a second career as a travel agent at Campus Travel in White Plains.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mildred Boxill Tackett, his daughters Melinda Tackett and Nerissa Tackett-Cusick and her husband Shaun, his twin sister Helen Tackett and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry on Jan. 7 at 2 p.m.
