DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Joan "Monica" Dwyer of Dobbs Ferry died March 14 at the age of 82. Her final days were spent in the comfort of her friends and family.
A resident of Dobbs Ferry since 1971, Dwyer was active in the American Irish Association of Westchester (AIAW) and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (LAOH). In 2001, she served as Grand Marshall of the annual Sleepy Hollow St. Patrick's Day parade.
She was born Nov. 28, 1929 in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. After attending schools in Ireland, Dwyer immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 19. She first settled in Brooklyn, N.Y. and then Rego Park, N.Y., beginning her career with Mutual of New York in Manhattan until her retirement in 1989.
On May 27, 1971 she married fellow Kerry native, Mike Dwyer, a widower with four children. In June of 1971, they moved the family into a house on Blanchard Avenue in Dobbs Ferry. Dwyer became a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Ardsley and was a regular churchgoer throughout her life.
Dwyer twice chaired AIAW annual heritage days, co-chaired the Celtic Ball and served as vice president of the County Board of Directors. In 1983, she joined the Kitty Geisler Division 11 of the LAOH and served as treasurer, vice president and president.
In 1996, she was appointed aide to the Grand Marshalls of the New York City St. Patrick's Day parade. Dwyer also marched in Mt. Kisco and Yonkers St. Patrick's Day parades.
Surviving are her children Marian Dwyer, Bernadette (John) Redd and Michael (Tricia) Dwyer, her brothers Christy (Ita) Cronin and Cyril Cronin, her sisters Helen Cronin and Bernadette (Tom) Kelly and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Mike in 1997 and her son Patrick in 1999.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
