Enjoy Summer Fun At The Ardsley Public Library

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – Summer is here and school is out in Ardsley. But thanks to the Ardsley Public Library, the learning doesn’t have to stop. The library is offering summer reading clubs, musical entertainment and crafts for learners of all ages as part of the Dream Big Read! Program.

"The studies show if children continue to read throughout the summer and school breaks, their performance  - come the school year - is much, much better,” said library director Angela Groth.

The Junior Summer Reading Club is open to children ages 3 to 5 and their parents. It features stories, movies and prizes. The program is held Wednesdays, June 25 – Aug. 1 at 3:30 p.m.

Preschool Storytime is also open to children ages 3 to 5 and will be held at the Elmsford Community/Senior Center in Elmsford. The program will run on Tuesdays, July 10 – Aug. 7 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Each week features a different theme, including night animals, dreams and wishes, outer space and bedtime.

The library will also offer two summer reading clubs; one for students in kindergarten through sixth grade, and the Own the Night program for students in seventh grade and above. Both clubs meet Thursdays from June 28 – Aug. 2. The K-6 club meets at 5 p.m. and Own the Night meets at 6:30 p.m.

Groth said the programs were designed to make the library fun for children and encourage them to become lifelong readers and library users.

In addition to reading programs, the library will also host three performances by Robert the Guitar Guy. They will be held on Tuesday, July 24, Friday, Aug. 10 and Tuesday Aug. 21, all at 1 p.m. The performances are recommended for children under five, Groth said.

Monday Movie Matinees, held July 23 and Aug. 20 at 2 p.m., and Drop-In Arts and Crafts, held Tuesdays July 24 – Aug 14 at 4 p.m., are open to all ages and require no registration.

Hosting summer reading programs and activities is typical for the library, Groth said, but the response this summer has been greatly improved compared to previous years.

“We beefed it up a bit,” Groth said. “We’ve had really nice attendance, with almost 100 kids every week.”

All programs are free and most require registration. For more information about the programs, or to register for an activity, call (914) 693-6636.
