Ex-Dobbs Ferry Social Worker, Giampiccolo, Dies

Wilma Whiteman Giampiccolo, a former director for St. Christopher's-Jennie Clarkson Child Care in Dobbs Ferry, died Dec. 9 at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow after a brief illness. She was 75.

A certified New York State master social worker, Giampiccolo worked as director of facilities management for the Dobbs Ferry company that provides foster care, boarding and healthcare services. She retired after 20 years of service in January of 2000.

Born Jan. 22, 1936 in Guilford, Conn. to Clifford Thomas Whiteman and Dorothy Swift Whiteman, she was the fifth of eight children. Giampiccolo attended Guilford public schools and Marymount College in Tarrytown, where she received a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1978. She went on to earn a master's degree in sociology from Fordham University in 1980.

Giampiccolo worked as director of facilities management for St. Christopher's-Jennie Clarkson Child Care. She retired after 20 years of service in January 2000.

On Jan. 22, 1956, she married lifelong Tarrytown resident, Louis Giampiccolo at Immaculate Conception Church in North Tarrytown. Together, they had three children.

During the 1960s and 70s, Giampiccolo was active in the Village of Tarrytown and Democratic party. She was an accomplished pianist and songwriter and she enjoyed painting.

She is survived by her sons Frank Giampiccolo of Tarrytown and Louis (Joanne) Giampiccolo, Jr. of New City, N.Y., her daughter Paula (Elliot) Giampiccolo Rivera of East Fishkill, N.Y., her brothers Gordy Whiteman and Greg Whiteman or Guilford, her sister Betty Abel of Guilford and Pat Whiteman of Clinton, Conn. and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Louis on Oct. 1, 2009, her parents, her brothers Thomas Whiteman and Giby Whiteman and her sister Dorothy Smith.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Coffey Funeral Home in Tarrytown. On Wednesday at 10 a.m., the funeral mass will be held at St. Augustine Church in Ossining. Interment to follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Phelps Memorial Hospital Critical Care Center, 701 North Broadway Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. 10591.
