The couple lived in White Plains for 53 years, finally relocating to Nancy Wallace's hometown of Marblehead, Mass., at the end of 2012.
Wallace was a graduate of Smith College. She then attended graduate school at Union Theological Seminary in New York, where she met Bruce Wallace, who was working as a mechanical engineer in New York City after graduating from MIT.
The couple settled in 1959 in White Plains, where they raised all three of their children, David, Gail and Lane.
Over the years, Nancy became increasingly involved in civic affairs in White Plains. She was the president of the Fisher Hill Neighborhood Association and a member of the Planning Commission before winning a seat on the White Plains Common Council in 1977.
As councilwoman, Wallace negotiated the city’s first cable TV contract and was instrumental in passing its first fair housing law. In 1983, she became the executive director of Bronx River Restoration Project Inc., which is credited with building sufficient support for restoring the river and its surrounding community.
The couple celebrated their 60th anniversary last summer with a big party for family and friends, followed by a quieter family celebration on Dec. 26 with children and grandchildren.
