Family, Friends Mourn Dobbs Ferry Grad Corey-Ochoa

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – George Ochoa remembers his daughter Martha Corey-Ochoa as a smart, kind and beautiful woman.

“She was like a supernova that shines brilliantly, but briefly and then goes out,” he said.

Friends and family gathered Saturday morning at the Immaculate Conception Church in Irvington to remember Corey-Ochoa, the Dobbs Ferry High School valedictorian and Columbia University student who jumped to her death Monday . Corey-Ochoa planned to double major in English and math at Columbia.

Corey-Ochoa's parents both gave eulogies at the funeral Mass, describing their daughter a a bright and thoughtful person. Corey recalled her daughter's unusual intelligence and wisdom, calling her an “old soul” who always sought greatness.

“I see her greatness in the light of her feelings and ideas which she shared with the world,” Corey said. “May this light, Martha's light, go with you for the rest of your journeys. That is Martha's legacy."

Father Roy Chettany expressed his heartfelt condolences to Corey-Ochoa's parents, but told the congregation he knew Martha was with God. Chettany said he always would remember Corey-Ochoa as a quiet, devoted parishioner who always showed her devotion to God.

“I firmly believe she perhaps with her silent attitude drew more people to the church,” he said, later telling her parents “Be proud of your daughter.”
