DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. Though the trick or treating had to start a little earlier than usual, Halloween could not be denied as costumed kids filled the streets to get their candy.
With parents trying to get the kids home before sunset Dobbs Ferry did its part by blocking off Main St. and Cedar St. for trick or treating and the Dobbs Furry Pet Parade. Shop owners gave out candy at their doors as local kids went trick or treating downtown. Lots of parents said they preferred the idea of trick or treating downtown rather than risk walking in potentially dangerous situations.
Its much better, much safer, we get to see all our friends, said Lisa Bergman. I love it.
The parade also provided another way for people to enjoy Halloween while staying safe. With fallen tree branches and downed power lines littering the streets, village officials and local police departments advised residents to enjoy the trick or treating early on, but to be home before nightfall.
We love it, we think its a nice outlet, said Tracy Osborne. Its just really great. My daughter is still too little to really go out door to door so this is perfect.
Parents used the opportunity to chat with friends while letting the kids enjoy Halloween in a safe environment.
I guess its more of a social event to see friends, said Maria Carluccio. I think its great to have the option to go out and see people you know. Its not always about the candy.Plus its good for the parents.
