With their final weekend of production for K-PAX approaching, The Armonk Players' Charles Hallock, who grew up in Hastings, said that the show's opening weekend couldn't have gone better.
"It was absolutely spectacular," Hallock said. "I didn't realize how funny the show was until the crowd started laughing."
Hallock, 33, who is currently living in Yonkers, joined The Armonk Players in 2003 and said that K-PAX is his fourth production with the group.
"They're a great group to work with," he said. "It's a talented bunch."
Since he was in high school, Hallock grew up in community theatre with the motivation to entertain. In addition to his acting, he also manages his own magic entertainment show under the name "The Great Charlini."
Hallock said he even performs magic tricks in his role as Prot in K-PAX.
His work with magic started when he was 15 and spent time at a Long Island magic camp.
"I enjoy doing magic because it's my own creation," Hallock said. "At any moment, I can deviate from the script and improvise."
But his interest in acting never differentiates from his magic work. Hallock said that acting and magic go "hand-in-hand" and play off each other while he performs.
"Houdini said that part of being a magician is just an actor playing a magician," he said. "That's why I love it."
As Charlini, Hallock travels throughout the local New York and Connecticut areas performing magic shows for children and adults. On weekends, he also remains active in community theatre.
During the week, he also does editing and film work for Hollywood Pop Gallery in Greenwich, Conn. In the future, Hallock said he's working to launch his own children's television show, "The Great Charlini Travel Magic Show," which aims to teach kids about international cultures.
