HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. Columbus Day presented an opportunity for parents and their kids to enjoy a day off in the sun. Many locals were out for the day with schools and government offices closed. With the sun shining and the cold air holding off for just a bit longer, the local parks and playgrounds were a popular spot to spend the day.
The park is different today, its a different mixture of kids with school out so its nice, said Hastings resident Casandra Arnon.
With temperatures flirting with the 80s, it didnt feel much like fall to anyone.
We did the beach yesterday, so the more sun and sand the better, said Yonkers resident Zena Shouery while her daughter played in the sandbox. Shouery said she was loving the weather. The longer it holds the better, Im not complaining. I just hope it holds until Halloween so the kids can get a warm day out of it.
Schools were closed so that left parents with more time to relax with their children and find ways to enjoy the day off.
We had a lazy day this morning, we did word searches and colored, now were here, said Susan Dominus, who was at the Reynolds Field playground in Hastings. I like to keep things unstructured on days off.
Many of the local popular spots were closed along with the village offices and schools, but the Hastings Public Library was open for parents looking for somewhere else to bring the kids.
Were going to go to the library later, were going to read about Columbus, Arnon said.
