Local Seniors Celebrate Thanksgiving Early

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Thanksgiving came early for some on Tuesday as the Embassy Hall in Dobbs Ferry hosted a holiday party for the seniors from the local villages.  With approximately 80 seniors in attendance and a live Elvis impersonator, the holiday party had a lively atmosphere.

“I just think at whatever age it’s not only great to be appreciative of what you have, but to be able to give back,” said Abby Connett, one of the event’s organizers.

As for the live Elvis impersonator, Connett said it was something they’ve done before to rave reviews.

“We did this once last year and the seniors went crazy for him so it’s exciting to surprise them,” she said.

The annual event is one where local seniors can come out and enjoy the company of their neighbors and celebrate the holidays.

“This is just an annual event, we have Thanksgiving, we have a New Year’s party,” said Pierrette Rissland, the director of senior services in Ardsley and a Dobbs Ferry senior advocate.  “We have all sorts of ways to celebrate with the seniors.”

Throwing parties like these in the community centers is something that Rissland said everyone from the seniors to the volunteers appreciates each year.

“It’s a way for us to get together and share a meal,” she said.  “For some of our seniors this is their Thanksgiving meal and it’s just a way for people to sit with friends and enjoy the holiday.”
