Mayor Encourages Shopping Local for the Holidays

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Shopping locally for the holiday season has been encouraged by Hastings Mayor Peter Swiderski recently because it brings business to the village while also keeping the streets busy and supporting local shop owners.

“It maintains the vibrancy of the downtown,” said Chelsea’s owner Lisa Globenfelt.  “Do you want a dark, dank and desolate downtown or a good positive energy?”

Local business owners encourage holiday shopping downtown because it supports not only the stores, but also the village itself.

“Dollars spent locally stay locally,” Globenfelt said.

While some may avoid shopping downtown because of issues such as parking, Swiderski has offered a remedy to further entice residents.

“Parking is free for the 10 days before Christmas and the local shopkeepers appreciate your business,” he said in a message to residents.

Swiderski even attached a list of local businesses with a brief description of what they have to offer to help boost holiday shopping.

Whether you’re looking to pick up clothes, jewelry, decorations, books, bikes or something else, there are plenty of options around town. Something that local businesses have to offer more than shopping online or in a department store is familiarity.

“I know my customers, I know your children, so chances are I know who you’re shopping for,” Globenfelt said.

Globenfelt, who’s owned her own business for the past 23 years, also owns the local shop Refind at the corner of Spring St. and Maple Ave. where her husband Jack mans the counter.

“This is really a shop for the local people,” he said. “We try to carry stuff that is interesting and fun.”

He does acknowledge that operating a small business has been an “uphill struggle” due to the economy though.

If an intimate shopping experience is something you desire then small businesses may be where to go this holiday season.

“We have some very loyal customers,” Jack said. “We take names, we call them when things come in and we deliver. We really just get to chat one on one for a few minutes.”
