DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- As stores come and go in Dobbs Ferry it's sometimes difficult to keep up with what's new in the village. Say Cheese & Thank You recently arrived and opened its doors in Dobbs Ferry on July 11.
The newest addition to Main St. is open for business after a migration from neighbor village Irvington. Store owner Darci DeMatteo has been in business since 2004, but she started out on a slightly different path. DeMatteo was a photographer at first, which is where the "say cheese" aspect of the store's name comes from.
"[I started out] shooting family and children's portraits, which I still do a little bit," DeMatteo said. "And then I thought to combine, since I was taking quality photos, to add the actual quality cards. Then I went to the stationery show and the rest is history."
An Irvington native for the last 13 years, DeMatteo knows the Rivertowns and Dobbs Ferry quite well. What is it that attracted DeMatteo to Dobbs Ferry over other local villages though?
"The foot traffic is better, the exposure is better, there's just a lot more traffic in general so far," she said. "So it seems like it's a great [fit]."
DeMatteo had her share of success while in Irvington, as her store was voted the best hostess gift store in Westchester by Westchester Magazine in 2010. She described her business as one that specializes in invitations and small gifts. DeMatteo said wedding invitations, bar mitzvah invitations etc. are approximately 60 percent of her business with gifts making up the other 40.
With the new location in Dobbs Ferry, DeMatteo said she is hoping old customers will spread the word to their neighbors.
"It's such a word of mouth business," she said. "If someone has a great experience getting invitations, they tell their friends. So I think that's something we can certainly be proud of for sure."
With the accolades in hand and a new location to put on the map, Say Cheese & Thank You has taken its first few steps in Dobbs Ferry.
"I think we've really established ourselves," DeMatteo said. "There's nothing like this in the Rivertowns. We're kind of your one stop shop."
