Pirates Take Over Chemka Pool in Hastings

HASTINGS, N.Y. -- The Chemka Pool in Hastings hosted another one of its Sunset Splash events this week. The pool party went with a pirate theme Monday night and invited local children from grades one to four to come out and enjoy the night.

"It's just kind of a night of fun for the little ones," said Kendra Garrison, pool director.

Lifeguards led the games for the kids, including water balloon tosses and relay races while balancing eggs on a spoon. One of the most popular parts of Sunset Splash is the noodle hour where kids get to have a free swim with the colorful pool toys. Half the pool still had lanes set up for people swimming laps, but there was a cluster of kids playing amidst a sea of noodles. The blue, green and orange floating noodles filled the pool as parents sat and chatted with others.

The pirate theme was a hit with the young children as it included temporary tattoos and a station for kids to make their own pirate hats. Eye patches were even handed out to help complete the look.

There are two sessions per season for each age group with the other group consisting of grades 5 to 12.

"We don't usually get many kids that old though," Garrison said.
