The Hudson River Crossing and New York Rising programs will introduce 4- to 14-year-old Rivertown children about careers in civil engineering, with a local twist.
Falco worked with a nationwide program called Engineering for Kids to create a unique program that is relevant to the Rivertowns.
Falco wanted the program to focus on local architecture and geography. “I wanted to do it in a way that would be very special,” she said. “Next time (one of the students) crosses the Tappan Zee Bridge they’ll know a lot about it.”
The Hudson River Crossing program for kids ages 4 to 7 will teach students about the seven Hudson River bridge crossings and will design their own bridge proposal.
The New York Rising program for 7- to 14-year-olds will examine three design proposals for the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement and will learn the science behind each design. They will design their own proposals and build models of them.
Falco thinks that the programs will kickstart the children’s interest in math and science and may even push them toward a career path. “For some kids it may just be an enrichment program because they already love math. For others it might spark an interest to get them to look at other career paths,” she said.
In the following session, Curious-On-Hudson will offer a course for the same age group on marine engineering. In this session children will design aquatic devices such as canoes, boats and scuba gear.
Falco would like to see Rivertown children connecting with the area they live in with a greater understanding of the way things work. “You may see a boat on the river every day,” she said. “You don’t realize that there is a lot of technology that goes into it.”
The first session will begin March 16 and will run for six weeks.
