ARDSLEY, N.Y. – Before there were computers at village hall and before Ardsley was what it is today, there was George Calvi.

The village manger’s hand has been in just about every transformation the village has seen since taking the job in 1990. The 56-year-old Valhalla resident reflects on these changes in his final village newsletter, found here, as the beloved village manager will retire on Sunday, Nov. 30.

“I’ve really enjoyed working in Ardsley these last 24-odd years,” said the Yonkers native. “It’s always been a friendly cooperative community. I'm going to miss my co-workers and the residents I deal with on a daily basis."

Although he’ll miss his job, Calvi said it’s time to pass the ball to someone else. Meredith Robson was selected by the village board to take over his position.

“It’s impossible to sum up the illustrious career of such an outstanding person in a few short words except to say that it has truly been a privilege to work with George, to learn from him and to be his friend," said Larry Tomasso, the village's building inspector. "We will miss him.”

Calvi said he truly loves his role as village manager, as he feel like he has the opportunity to make an impact and improve people's lives.

“I have access to people in town, the county, state and federal level, which the average Joe on the street doesn’t," said Calvi. "If I can be their advocate for any particular issue, I’m happy to be.”

Calvi’s access could even reach the not so easy to deal with utility companies.  Calvi says one of his finest achievements was persuading Con Edison to finally take over the maintenance of utility poles on McCormack Drive, which connects Ashford Avenue to the Ardsley Middle School. Calvi outlines additional achievements in his newsletter.

The village manager said he excited for the chance to make a difference in other areas and is already looking into volunteer work and adding a global management degree to his existing masters and bachelors. He is also looking forward to spending more time with his wife Enna and their two children.

“I am going to miss the flurry of activity on a daily basis,” said Calvi.

A reception honoring Calvi will be held on Sunday, Nov. 23 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ardsley Firehouse, at the second floor meeting room.
