WESTCHESTER, N.Y. – While she enjoyed the fireworks, picnics and celebrating with family, 9-year-old Irvington resident Brynne Norquist didn’t forget what the Fourth of July really means.
Westchester Has Fourth Of July Fun
“It’s not about having fun, it’s so special how the people won the war for us,” Brynne said Wednesday evening. “It’s about how America did it and the people who served our country. Plus it’s America’s birthday.”
For 9-year-old Jenesse Bell of Yonkers, Fourth of July also means you get to show pride in America.
“It’s when you get to wear red, white and blue and you get to see fireworks,” Jenesse said.
Irvington’s Ben Kasoff, 6, thinks it might be about something else.
“It’s the start of a new year,” Ben said. “Right? Is that it? Oh it’s Independence Day.”
Thousands of Westchester residents flew their American flags, wore their country’s colors and watched the fireworks light up the sky Wednesday night at Dobbs Ferry’s Waterfront Park, Irvington’s Matthiessen Park and in Sleepy Hollow. Several villages and towns also celebrated with parades during the daytime and food, games, picnics and spent time with family in the park through the evening.
“It’s about celebrating our independence and freedom but it’s really nice to spend time with family too. We also wanted to make sure Kaylie got to see some fireworks,” said Lisa Jean of Mount Vernon after Kaylie, 2, chimed in.
“I’m eating food and I’m having fun,” Kaylie said.
