YONKERS. N.Y. - Little Matthew Fedor has joined the Yonkers Police Benevolent Team in its fight against cancer and will have his head shaved next month at Fogarty's Tavern in Bronxville for the cause.
Matthew's mother Janet told her son that members of the Yonkers Police Department where she works were "getting haircuts" to help raise awareness and funds to fight cancer and the 5-year-old asked if he could join. The effort will fund the St. Baldrick's Foundation cancer work.
"I love the police men," Matthew said. "They get the bad guys and put them in the cage and help the sick kids. I'm going to have to wear a hat outside so my head doesn't freeze off, because it will get money for sick kids and help them feel better."
Once Matthew had his appointment set, he and his parents set a goal of $1,600 and had his web page set up for business. As of Monday, the site had received $1,501.
According to his mother, Matthew's runs to her every morning so he can check his web page and see if anyone else has donated. His sister Hailie logs on for him and reads the names. When he got to the $1,000 mark he screamed, "What, $1,000?"
