Jeffrey Herring, the alleged shooter, and Mark Mack were already in police custody when Travis Davis and Andrew Reynolds were arrested by federal authorities on Thursday morning, according to a release from U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. A fifth man, Jesse Hummel, was arrested Wednesday night by federal officials in Arizona.
According to Bharara, all five of the men face counts of murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
The arrests come in response to the shooting death of Michael Northcote, a 34-year-old man who authorities say was dealing marijuana out of his Swan Lake home.
According to an indictment unsealed in White Plains federal court on Thursday, the five men are accused of forcing their way into Northcote’s home at 177 Cohen & Cohen Road on Oct. 12. 2015. Herring is accused of shooting and killing Northcote.
“As alleged, these defendants undertook a violent home-invasion robbery, which resulted in the senseless murder of Michael Northcote,” Bharara said in a statement. “I want to thank all of our federal, state and local law enforcement partners, especially Sullivan County District Attorney James Farrell for his extraordinary partnership with our office in this important case.”
In addition to Farrell, Bharara’s office was aided in the case by the New York Field Division of the FBI, New York State Police, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, and the Monticello, Liberty, Fallsburg and Casa Grande, Arizona, police departments.
Farrell, while praising the work of each department involved, credited the officers, detectives, investigators, special agents and prosecutors responsible for the arrests.
“This indictment is a step toward justice for Michael Northcote and his family and I look forward to continued collaboration with our United States attorney in this and other important cases,” Farrell said.
According to Bharara, each man faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the conspiracy to committee robbery charge, up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the robbery charge and up to life in prison or the death penalty if convicted of Northcote’s murder.
