RIVERTOWNS, N.Y. – About 55 percent of all Rivertowns customers remained without power Wednesday morning, a day after the worst of Hurricane Sandy swept through Westchester County.
An estimated 5,371 out of 9,375 customers in Dobbs Ferry, Hastings and Ardsley were without power at 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to Con Edison reports. In Dobbs Ferry, about 1,623 out of 4,153 customers were without power. There were 2,005 out of 3,436 homes in Hastings without power. In addition, 1,543 out of 1,786 homes in Ardsley were without power Tuesday morning, according to Con Edison reports.
Officials with Con Edison could not determine Wednesday morning when a majority of the outages in Westchester County would be repaired. While the height of the storm passed through Tuesday, representatives said it could take “a few days” to repair all of the damage and restore power, according to a news release.
Officials reported Tuesday that about 780,000 customers were without electrical service, according to a news release. As of Wednesday morning, the outages included about 250,000 customers in Manhattan, 180,000 in Westchester County, 108,000 in Queens, 109,000 in Staten Island, 87,000 in Brooklyn, and 45,000 in the Bronx. Con Edison restored power to approximately 140,000 of the 930,000 customers impacted at some point by the storm, according to the release.
“In overhead areas, many roads are blocked by fallen trees or flooded,” officials said in the release. “Restoring electrical service to underground equipment demands cleaning all components of sea water, drying and testing to make it safe to restore power.”
Authorities are asking customers to report outages and downed wires to Con Edison and not through local emergency service lines. Customers can call 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers are asked to have their Con Edison account numbers available and report whether their neighbors also have lost power. Customers who report outages will be called by Con Edison with their estimated restoration times as they become available, according to a press release.
The previous record number of storm outages in Con Edison territory occurred in 2011, when Hurricane Irene caused about 203,000 customers to lose service, according to the release.
