A Breakdown of the Hastings Election Candidates

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Tuesday is Election Day, and the ballot in Hastings consists of two open seats on the Board of Trustees as well as the village justice. Incumbent Nicola Armacost and former trustee Marge Apel are running uncontested for the two board seats. There are four trustee seats on the board, not including the mayor.

Nicola Armacost , a 48-year-old Hastings resident who has lived in the village since 2002, was appointed to the board in 2009 and was elected in 2010. She works as a managing director at Arc Finance, which is “a not-for-profit organization that links financing mechanisms with clean energy and water in the developing world.”

Marge Apel , a 66-year-old Hastings resident who has lived in the village since 1979, served on the board for six years ending in 2007. Apel works as the director of career development at Manhattan College.

Incumbent Joseph DiSalvo is running uncontested for village justice. DiSalvo served as the acting justice, who fills in for the elected justice, from 1988 to 2004 and has been the elected justice since 2004. He will be seeking his third consecutive four-year term. DiSalvo is a managing partner at Nobile, Magarian, DiSalvo, LLP. The 60-year-old has lived in the village since 1979.

The largest issue addressed by candidates for the Board of Trustees is the pending waterfront cleanup. Members of the volunteer advisory committee were announced Saturday by Hastings Mayor Peter Swiderski. The board will work with the committee to create infrastructure plans to provide to British Petroleum before the cleanup begins.

Apel, Armacost and DiSalvo are all running as Democrats and were all nominated by the Hastings Democrats in January.

Residents can vote from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the James Harmon Community Center. According to Village Clerk Susan Maggiotto, the village population is 7,849; there are 5,396 registered voters in Hastings.
