A Look Back At 2013 In Rivertowns: Deadly Derailment Tops The News

RIVERTOWNS, N.Y. -- The derailment of a Metro-North train on the Hudson River Line in the Bronx that caused the death of four passengers was the top story in the Rivertowns in 2013.

Commuters in the Rivertowns found alternate routes and means of transportation into New York City after a Metro-North passenger train derailed in the Bronx near the Spuyten Duyvil station on Sunday, December 1 at 7:20 a.m. leaving four dead and 63 injured. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority investigation found that the train was running at 82 miles per hour on the curved section of track causing the accident. 

Hastings-On-Hudson residents voted down an $8.1 million school bond proposal in October that would have included a new athletic complex with synthetic a turf football field at Reynolds Field. Many residents were for the capital improvements on the schools and the athletic fields but against the use of artificial turf.

In Dobbs Ferry, the village joined with Westchester County, New York State and private donors in beginning work on waterfront park improvements that will include stabilization of the Hudson River shoreline, revitalization of the Waterfront Park and expansion of the RiverWalk trailways along the Hudson River in the village. In addition, a new fishing pier and boat dock, funded by the New York Department of State, will be built in 2014.

The Village of Ardsley continued work on the Ashford Avenue Bridge across the Saw Mill Parkway and New York State Thruway, did major sidewalk renovation along Heatherdell Road and welcomed several new businesses to the Ardsley Square area, including Planet Wings.

Ardsley Police helped capture three suspects in the  robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank on Saw Mill Road in Ardsley on March 29 as Hastings, Yonkers and other local police assisted in the chase and capture.

The new Walgreens store was completed in June and opened on Broadway and Ashford Avenue in Dobbs Ferry.

The Village of Hastings also welcomed several film crews, including the three-day shoot of a planned HBO Television series "The Leftovers,, which is expected to air in September 2014. The filming included dozens of local extras and residents who played a variety of roles.

Greenburgh and the Rivertowns villages were hosts to a visit from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall during the Fourth of July weekend when hundreds came to honor those who served.
