HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Andrus-on-Hudson resident Hyman Balbirer will celebrate his 100th birthday at 12:05 p.m. on Friday, March 20.

Balbirer will celebrate his birthday with friends and family in the Longue Vue Cafe’ at Andrus-on-Hudson.

Balbirer was born in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn on March 24, 1915. His parents were Abraham and Gerta Balbirer. He had two older brothers – Abraham and Irving.

Balbirer graduated from Boys High School in Brooklyn.  After that he was a self-educated person who believed the world was his classroom. He was a devoted son and never married in order to look after his parents.

In a career spanning more than 40 years, Balbirer worked as a salesman in the textile industry for firms such as the John Wolfe Company and Cone Mills.  In retirement, Balbirer volunteered as an aide at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers. Throughout his life, he was a railroad enthusiast who traveled to most of the national parks in the United States and Canada by train.  As an outdoors person, he was an accomplished hiker and gave his time generously to environmental and conservation causes.

After a serious bout of pneumonia in March of 2009, Balbirer moved from his home on Warburton Avenue in Yonkers to Andrus-on-Hudson in Hastings. At age 100, Balbirer continues learning by being an avid reader.
